Finally, he lets out a crooked smile, drops his axe and lets out a laugh. After the Troll lost, he questions why the two are still there and starts to get angry, taking out an axe during his second song. In the mod, Derpina calls on the Boyfriend to help take out Smiler, who is sad that he is not feeling sane (/sad he's not being remembered?). Smiler then takes out a picture of Derp next to a woman named Derpina and says he'll take care of her. After Derp is psychologically tortured, he grins madly and presumably goes insane. Derp questions where he is and tells the Trollge he is not his best friend, so Smiler tries to help him smile by showing him footage on television that tells Derp to smile through subliminal messages. When Derp wakes up, he is strapped to a chair and Smiler has a conversation with him. Smiler is sitting on a bench when he sees his "best friend" Derp, he follows him into an alleyway where he sneaks up behind him and knocks him out.
Smiler is the reincarnation of a man that owned a simple TV store, but after his ex-wife took his daughter, he committed suicide. He decided to see his "best friend" after losing her. He was formerly a normal father with a daughter that he loved, but one day he took someone important to her that made her see him as a monster, and he slowly became one. The images that flash on the TV range from a technical difficulties screen, to a blue screen with a bar in the middle, to IRIS's symbolic eye, and to pure static whenever he sings. In his final phase, he has the body of a normal Trollge but the head of his original self.ĭuring the rematch with Smiler in Technophobia, he is primarily seen in his complete Trollge form holding an analog television, trying to make Boyfriend "smile". Smiler constantly becomes glitched in numerous ways. However, when pushed, it seems he becomes more akin to a normal Trollge. Smiler starts as a less monstrous Trollge, relating more to what a normal stick figure would look like.
Starting out as the first challenge Boyfriend faces in the mod, complete with his own full week with 3 songs, he later returns during Technophobia, completely under Legion's control.
Smiler is the first opponent of The Trollge Files' story, being released back when the mod first came out. Oh, and one of the cutscene songs (most noticeably used for Trollge Girlfriend) is called "Forbidden Dance," which could very likely be a sexual reference.
